Here is what I did today

A couple of months ago my neighbor and I attended a class on making a Turning Twenty quilt. It is not my favorite pattern so I put it away until today. Tomorrow I will quilt it by using a technique I learned in a Quilt as You Go class. The quilt is only sewn in rows in this photo. I will quilt each long row and then sew them together. It is hard to explain the technique, but I am sure that many, if not all, of you are familiar with it. I also plan on cutting and sewing some of the 35 pinwheels I need for my next project.

Hope you had a good day!

Oh yeah...

I just want to say thank you to everyone who has wished me well on my upcoming surgery. I go to see Dr. Rasputin on Tues. and he will give me all of the wonderful details. I am sure he will give me some kind of wonderful intestinal cleansing cocktail to enjoy on Wednesday night!

I am so tickled (just in case you are not Southern or from some strange foreign country across the pond or down under - that means I am happy) to have so many blog friends and it really makes me feel good that you all care.

Thanks again - I will keep you updated. Hey here's a question ... I have been watching my calories the past few weeks. Do you think that the intestinal cleansing will wash away and candy calories I eat now and on Easter Sunday? Let me know - I will be waiting your response with Reese's Pieces in my hand.

My Crazy Friend Lisa and Purses

My crazy friend Lisa came over yesterday and we made purses. She had called me the other day and said she would be here at 8 a.m. I understood her to say she would leave her home at 8 a.m. She lives an hour away so I figured I could get up early (7:30 a.m) have time to have some coffee, a shower and run the vacuum over the ugly black carpet in my bedroom. At 8 a.m. she called me for final directions - I was like WHAT!?!?! You are where? I was still in my jammies with my first cup of coffee in my hand. I told her, "come on woman, but you will have to be patient, I don't do much before I have at least one cup of coffee!"

We had a really good time chatting and sewing. We realized that we need to talk less when we sew, we made a few (many) mistakes and had to do a little (a lot) of ripping out. Oh well, lesson learned.

Here is my purse. I don't think it is a good picture, but you should get the idea. She embroidered my name and a little cross stitch design for me. She knows I like to do needle work! She is a sweetie and we have fun. Oh yeah, she brought me a cinnamon roll for breakfast - gotta love a girl who brings you sugar to the start the day!

My Weekend

I have been missing again for a few days - here is the story. Friday morning "The Baby" called to let me know that she had been suffering with stomach pains all night long. At one point she thought she was going to be sick and went down the hall to the bathroom. Luckily, she was not sick, but on the way back to her room, she felt the blood rush from her head and broke out in a cold sweat. Thinking she was going to pass out, she laid on the floor in the hallway to try to recover. A couple students came out of their rooms (or possibly they were just getting home - you know college kids), and asked if she needed help, my stubborn baby said no and proceeded to drag herself back to her room. I was a bit upset that she didn't call me while the situation was going on, but decided to discuss (read - lecture) that with her later. I got in the shower and jumped in the car and was off to the rescue. I didn't let her know I was coming because I knew she would try to talk me out of it. (I am not sure why, after 18 years, she has not figured out that I am the original stubborn one in this family. No one can convince me to do anything different when I have my mind set.)

She really looked bad when I picked her up. My heart broke to see her feel that bad. I got a quick lunch for her and we were off. She said she felt much better than last night, so I asked if I could drop by a quilt shop I had just found out about. Looking back, I feel like a crappy Mom. Here she is sick, me rushing off to get her and I am thinking about material!! Oh well, what is done is done. The quilt shop was wonderful and huge! I picked up a couple floral prints for my pinwheel quilt.

The Baby slept all the way home (2 hour ride), crawled into her bed and slept till dinner and then went back to bed after dinner. I had to get her back to school around 12 noon on Sunday. She is doing better for the most part. She has had reflux since she was a baby and it is worse when she is under stress. Finals are around the corner and she is a bit of a perfectionist (don't know where she got that from), she expects more from herself than anyone else and she pushes herself really hard sometimes. I worry about her, but I know that she will learn to deal with the stress and become a better person for it. A Mom's gotta worry though.

Missing in Action

As you all have noticed, I have been missing in action for the past couple of days. Well, maybe you haven't noticed, but I am going to tell myself that you have spent a couple of sleepless nights wondering where I was and if I was alright!

Tuesday I spent a few hours with my gyno. Dr. It was my first time meeting him and I will say that he has the bedside manner of a stick. His name is Dr. R.... well I call him Dr. Rasputin (are you making a connection yet?) I am changing the name because I am sure that his nurses will find my blog and tell Dr. Rasputin (when you read this next part, make your voice go high and nursy sounding) "Oh Dr. Rasputin, we just found this wonderful, funny, witty, enlightening blog that you must read." Then Dr. Rasputin will read it, figure out it was me who wrote it and leave some metal instrument in the cavity that will be created when he removes my womanly, baby making parts. I will never be able to fly again because I will set off the metal detectors. Hell, I probably won't ever be able to shop again because I will set off all the store detectors - I might even end up in jail! So you can see why I am protecting the innocent (myself).

I had been told that I probably would need a hysterectomy by my family Dr. who I will call Dr. Nice Lady. She says that although Dr. Rasputin has no personality/bedside manner, he is an excellent surgeon. So I guess as long as he doesn't read my blog, I will be safe. Surgery is scheduled for April 8. I am not nervous about it at all. I am more worried about leaving the running of "my" house in the hands of "Big", no one (and I mean no one) can take care of the house the way I do baby. I hope that they give me some strong drugs that I can take until "Big" decides to go back (read - run back) to work.

I did manage to get to a quilt shop and purchase some more material for my pinwheel quilt. I also got some information on some upcoming Shop Hops. I will post photos later.

Hope you are having a good week - will talk to you all later!

I'm Just Saying

While making the bed this morning, I turned on the TV because I realized Martha Stewart would be on. I thought that I might glean some Easter crafts from Martha. Her craftiness intimidates me, I mean really, is anyone that good? Anyway, back to the story, as the show was going to commercial, they showed a basket of eggs her chickens had lain. They were all colors and looked real pretty. I thought, "I can do that, it can't take much brain power to put some eggs in a basket or bowl!" So I went to the refrigerator and pulled out some of the eggs that our chickens lay. We have 8 chickens and they lay white, light brown, dark brown, green and blue eggs (just like Martha's chickens). I arranged the eggs nicely in a bowl and took them on the front porch to take a photo of them in the sun - I thought the light would be better.

Here is what happened next.

I'm just saying, I don't think this ever happens to Martha!

Color Theory Class

Just finished part of my homework for the Color Theory Class I am taking with the yahoo group StitchMAP. I am really learning a lot. Anyway, we had to find cool colors, warm colors and a mix of both and then stitch a flower. I chose to do cross stitch as my needlework method. I used to do a lot of cross stitch and then got tired of it and moved on to something else. I might pick it back up again! I had fun with it.

Bad Mood

Yesterday, I did not blog. I was in a little bit of a bad mood. Big likes to say I was a Biotch (not sure how that is spelled - looks more like Bio Tech or something, anyway you get my meaning). I have not been sleeping well and I think that it is catching up with me. Also, The Baby had a bad day on Wed. and then a worse night. When I hear about her troubles, I feel somewhat helpless because she is so far away and I have to let her figure some things out on her own.

Anyway, needless to say, yesterday was sort of a waste. I did manage to get the bed made and I cooked dinner, but that was about it. I did a lot of lurking on other blogs and came up with a very long list of things I want to make. Oh yeah, I went to Dollar Tree and bought some things to make all of the crafts that are on my long list! Now I just have to get off my butt and do them. I find it easier to spend money buying what I need for projects than acutally doing the projects. What about you?

I will be honest, all I really want to do is sit on the front porch in the sun. I should have Spring Fever, but I think I have the opposite - what would that be called?

By the way, most def not my front porch, but I would kill to have one like that!

Talk to you all soon - hope you have a wonderful day!

Happy St. Patricks Day!

Happy St. Patricks Day to you! Today I have to run out and do a little shopping - more fabric - so I will try to dig through my closet and find something green to wear. The Baby called this morning and said she was wearing green knee high socks with a denim skirt. I have a vision of Britney Spears in that old video, I think it was titled "Baby, One More Time". I am sure that she looks cute though - somehow my daughter can carry those kind of things off!

I would have a green beer to celebrate, but wine is more my thing. I am not sure that green wine would be very visually appealing!

I also want to say thanks to my followers and others who look at my blog. I am so happy to hear your comments and feel like I am making new friends. Thanks a lot - you guys are wonderful.

See you all soon!

Floral fabric for my new quilt

As I said the other day, I am on a quest to get material for a new quilt I want to make. So, I hooked up with my friend Lisa and went to a quilt shop that is a few towns north of where we live.

While I was waiting for Lisa to check out, I sauntered over to the Bernina sewing/embroidery machine area. The sales lady that had been sitting at her computer and totally ignoring me while I was shopping for material, suddenly became interested in me. She jumped up and began to point to "The" machine. It was a beauty! It sat on a table by itself, all clean and pretty, with spools and spools of bright colored thread attached to it. My eyes were drawn to it and without noticing it, my hand made it's way to the machine and I started to touch it, actually I was stroking it. I began to hear angels sing and a voice kept saying "buy me, buy me." I looked at the sales woman, thinking it was her. She was talking, but she wasn't saying anything that sounded like "buy me." I managed to pull my hand away and ask for the price. "Only $8899," she said ever so casually. My heart stopped and I thought I would pass out at the expense. I knew that I had to turn away from "The" machine or I might actually pull out a credit card. I turned around to ask about the machines that we grouped together sitting in the dark. Sales lady waves her hand at them as if to blow them off and said, "Oh those...they are $4500." She laid her hand on my shoulder and turned my body, ever so gently, so that I was facing "The" machine again. I felt myself weaken, I began to ask questions and envision it in my sewing room. Luckily, Lisa came over and said she was finished shopping. It was enough to break the spell I was under and force myself to leave the store. Last night in bed, I dreamt of "The" machine, but I also dreamt my daughter had a huge lower jaw with very sharp teeth and was trying to bite me. I don't think either dream meant anything!!!

Anyway, here are my material choices. I think that I have about 14 or 15 of the 35 I need. Must do more shopping!!! What do you think of the colors? They will be on a white on white background.

See you soon,

Shopping Therapy

Just a quick note - I did make it to a quilt store yesterday! I will take some photos of my purchases later today. I have to walk the dog and get my house clean before I play on the computer any more. My house kind of looks like a tribe of 5 year old wild children came in played with no abandon for a few hours!

Big

Just as Carrie in "Sex in the City" had a Big, so do I. Big is the bread winner in the house, also my best friend and everything else. Big supervises the corrections department in a high security male Federal Prison here in WV. Big's name comes from the result of the muscles that are earned by being in the gym 4 - 5 days a week, competing in Dead-lift, Bench-Press, Strongman and a few other competitions. Big is not someone you would want to mess with. I will say that my daughter and I know another side of Big, but we are not allowed to talk about the soft side!! Needless to say, you won't see photos of Big or really hear too many stories about Big. It is necessary for the job that Big is low profile - inmates and their families search for anything to use against prison employees. We move every two to three years because of the job - if you want a promotion, you move. I grew up in a military family, so I don't really mind moving. Our plan is to stay here until "The Baby" graduates. We see our moves as a way to see parts of the US that we might not have seen any other way, we try to act as tourist when we get someplace new. I will post more later about all of the moving and where we have lived. But for now, you at least know a little about one of the members of my family!

It's Official - I am sad!

Got home a couple of hours ago after taking "The Baby" back to college. I poured myself a glass of wine (maybe two) and realized how quiet the house is. I have picked her up and taken her back to school many times over the last 6 months, but it is always hard the first few days after she leaves. She is not only my daughter but my best friend. I really miss her!

I will be better in a day or two. It makes me very happy that she loves school, her professors and her new friends. If she were sad, I don't think I could let her go.

This week will be sort of busy, so it will help me get over being sad. Tomorrow in the a.m. I have an appointment with my Doctor. We will discuss exciting things like, high cholesterol (mine is 209) low iron (not sure of the number, but it is bad) and a probable hysterectomy. Whoopee - how exciting is that?!?! I will, however, be in a town that is bigger than where I live and it has some pretty decent shopping, so I will spend a little time spending a little money!! I have a new quilt project that I am purchasing material for. I am very excited. If you look at the McCalls Quilting site and look down the left side you will see a pinwheel quilt with some applique vines and leaves on it, that is the one I want to make. It love the white with the bright/pastel pinwheels. I need 35 different florals. I have about 10, so I figure I really must shop and spend money - what do you think??

By the way - tomorrow, I am going to introduce you to my family (Big and The Baby)and let you know a little more about me. Hope you will be interested enough to come back!

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! Thanks for stopping by!

I will be back soon!

As I posted a few days ago, my daughter is home on spring break! Yeah for me! We are having such a good time - I am so happy!

I will post more about her visit after Sunday. I will have to take her back to school on Sunday and I will have many hours of free time to post. She is such a funny, silly, wonderful person and she manages to bring all of that and more out of me.

I also want to say that I have been reading a wonderful book on blogging and it has really made me think about what I want for my blog. I am going to be doing some changes on my blog and I hope that everyone likes them. I am inspired by Shay over at Quilting in My Pyjamas also, go here to read her blog. She is so funny and real and I love to read her blogs. She has stated that she will remain true to herself and not worry so much about what others think of her - I admire that and will become more "me" on my blog also. I am actually a funny person - at least that what my friends say!

Picking Up Baby

Well, I am off to get my baby from college and bring her home for a week!!! Yeah!! I am so excited. This semester has been really busy for her and we have not seen much of her. I think that it has been about 6 weeks since she was home, for me, that is way too long. I love waking up and walking by her room and seeing her sleep - that is something that has not gone away since she was a baby. Of course, when she was little she often slept with me (I know - not good parenting skills)!

Hope everyone has a great day and a wonderful weekend! We have sunshine and it is so wonderful!

Color Wheel

I am taking a Color Theory Class with a yahoo group. The name of the group is StitchMAP. I was lucky enough to be selected to participate in the first Color Theory class. One of the things we had to do is create our own color wheel. I decided to post what I learn from the class on my blog. If anyone is interested in StitchMap, let me know, it has become an invitation only group. I am having so much fun in this class and I love my Mentor, Diane.

Update

Can't believe it is already Wednesday. My last post was on Sunday - shame on me! I want to let everyone know that I have been cleared of any breast issues as of right now. Apparently calcifications can cluster in your breast - that is not good. Mine were not clustered, but layered and according to the experts - that is good. So I go back in 6 months just to make sure nothing changes. I am thankful that all is well and I can relax about this health issue. I did find out that my cholesterol is a little high though!! Boy, if it is not one thing it is another!
